….Well, maybe not in the way that he meant it in Wedding Crashers….but the line works for this blog post.

Over the weekend I had the chance to be the DJ at a fundraiser in my hometown of Pepperell. It was for a local family dealing with cancer. The young, married father of 3 young kids was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and even though had been given a good prognosis was starting a very tough road of treatment. They have insurance, but are responsible for the 1st $7000 of treatment plus anything not covered by insurance. Needless to say, they need help, prayers, support and good luck.

The family had rallied together to put on this fundraiser. They rented a hall, had some finger food brought in, purchased a Nintendo Wii to raffle off and also had a 50/50 raffle where the tickets were $100. I brought down my little DJ/Karaoke setup for entertainment and everything seemed to come together.

What really struck me was when I met his little daughter (I won’t use her name as I just decided to write this and would want to ask permission 1st). She was a beautiful little 7 year old girl. After talking withher and telling her some of my horrible little kid appropriate jokes (and yes, she humored me and laughed), I found out that she was in the same grade as my daughter. I asked her if she knew “Libbie” and and she said, “Is here real name Elizabeth?”. While they were not in the same class, she did know her and even remembered who she had for a teacher last year! It was at that moment that I realized this wonderful little girl had a father who has cancer and even though she was aware of it, was strong. It made me think of my daughter (as well as my son) and what would be going though my mind if this was me going through this? Would I have the $7000 to pay this deductible? Could my family survive with me out of work for months? I could go on and on with the questions I would have in my head, but I think you all get the picture. It is scary and something I pray I or anyone else never has to go through. I am glad this family has the support it does to help lighten the load a bit.

The little girl asked if she could sing some Karaoke. I said no problem and asked her what she wanted to sing. She picked the song Barbie Girl, which at the time I thought was just a fun little song. Well, a minute into it, I realized for the 1st time in MANY years of playing it, that it really wasn’t appropriate for a 7 year old to sing and quickly changed over to a much safer Taylor Swift song! She was so happy singing for everyone and received a nice round of applause from the crowd.

Near the end of the night, the winners were announced. There were 4 people who won cash in the 50/50 raffle. At the time of me writing this, 3 of the 4 winners donated their winnings back (which were $1000.00 a piece!). It was really generous of the winners to donate the money back. These days, everyone could use extra money, but when you step back and take a look at it, this family needs it more. It was also great to know his work was behind him 100% and bought some 50/50 tickets and were helping him at work.

What made me post this today is that this is just 1 example of someone (or a family) who are dealing with cancer (or any other serious disease). Most are not as lucky as this family is to have people put together a fundraiser like this to help them. Some people are also afraid to ask for help. Either way, there is much more we can all to do help people. I encourage everyone out there to take the time to find out how members of your family are, how your neighbors are, how people in your community are and do what you can to make a difference.

Here at MIKE-FM, we have a page called “Random Acts of Kindness”. You can click on it from our homepage, or here is a direct link: http://www.937mikefm.com/pages/5069381.p… At MIKE-FM, on December 18th we will be doing our annual “Request for Help” to benefit the Franciscan Hospital for Children. If you have not heard of them yet, I encorage you to check them out at: http://www.franciscanhospital.org/

I had the chance to visit this hospital last year and it is full of wonderful people helping wonderful kids in need. They not only are looking for donations of any amount, but also for donations of just your time. You can play a game with a child or just hold a baby who is sick and whose parents have to work to pay the bills during the day or is parent-less. This hospital takes in the kids that Children’s Hospital can’t take due to the severity of the illness (or at least that is how I understand it). They have a wonderful staff there and I encourage all of you to take the time to go to their site and see how you can make a difference.

That is what this is all about. People helping People. If we all just do what we can, it can make a world of difference to those in need. If you have money and can donate to a cause, great. If you don’t but can spare and hour every now and then reading to a sick child or stopping by to check on a senior citizen in your town who is home bound, great. Maybe you can just get a few donations and participate in a walk or attend a local fundraiser like I spoke of about and just pay a few bucks to get in…it all matters and makes a difference.

Life isn’t about how much money you make, how expensive your house is or what kind of car you drive.  If you have kids, it is about spending as much time with them that you can, teach them right and make a lot of great memories.  Keep your family and friends close and be there for each other.  When you need help, ask.  When you see someone needs help, offer.

Okay, well that is my sensitive post for the year. Now, off to go get a diet coke and find a way to skip some meetings around here and take a nap on the couch!

While “conducting research” at work, I found this video online.  I used to love this show as a kid but never remember seeing the full version of the opening theme song like this!

I was watching Sponge Bob with my 7 year old last night and during a commercial, a Public Service Announcement came on.  It had some teenage boy dressed up as a cell phone and it was about teen dating.  The boy was sending the girl text messages non-stop and they show him as the cell phone and he is saying what he is texting her.  It was ok until the last text he sent, which again, he is saying out loud while dressed as a cell phone: “Nude pics….send me some”.

Now, I get what the message is.  Kids go through this more and more these days….there is a ton of pressure I’m sure.  How many times have you heard over the past year about “sexting” and the Police having to go into schools to investigate these incidents.  I have no problem with the PSA, BUT, I do think 7pm during Sponge Bob is NOT where it should be shown.

Sponge Bob (even though many adults watch it) is for kids I would guess between 3-10?  It’s on Nickelodeon! I do not know of many kids in that age range who have a cell phone (even though I read a post on Facebook recently from a high school classmate who was amazed to see 7 year olds talking on cell phones in Nebraska…which I think was fake because since when did Nebraska get cell phone service, but I digress).  And how many of them are even in a relationship where the boy is asking them to take nude pictures to text over?  My 7 year old has a “boyfriend”….but they maybe say hi once per day at school, she doesn’t know where he lives and if I am correct they will be over each other in 2 days because her other friend likes him and she now likes someone else.  The drama that comes in 2nd grade!

I think this PSA should have been put on a channel or during a commercial break of a show that teenagers watch, not little kids.  The PSA shown is compelling in the fact that the kid is dressed up like a cell phone and is sure to draw kids in to watch it as they find it amusing.  But in the end, I do not want her asking me what “sending a nude picture is”!  I do not need that to be in her mind as even a thought!  She should be thinking about what crayon to use for her drawing or how she can’t wait to go to girl scouts!

Kids these days are exposed to a lot at an early age.  No matter how much we try to protect them and let them just be kids, something always seems to find it’s way through when you least expect it.  I just didn’t expect it to be on Nickelodeon and about sending nude pics!

I would love to know what you think. Am I over reacting?  Would you be comfortable with your little one seeing this?  Feel free to post your comments below…just remember to fill out the “captcha” thing below where you put your comments so it can be posted.

Here is the PSA if you haven’t seen it.

Fall-ing forward as we begin to change routines and add or subtract task to our schedules, let’s try to focus on Healthier eating habits. I know it’s a BIG challenge for a lot of us. We are so use to avoiding change unless we are guaranteed results. That’s called skepticism or if you’re a thinker, contempt prior to investigation. Only because we first consider what other people say, feel about or are doing in that situation. Not everything I cook is low fat or healthy but I’m developing better guidelines as I manage my weekly budget and food choices. All considered, lets say if we decided to prepare two to three dinners a night at home. This is how to start:

  • We see what’s on sale that week at our favorite grocery store
  • Make a food choice as to what to have those days and write it down
  • Find a recipe or pull from your collection of favorites & at this point if you need to; alter the recipe to accomplish your goal of healthier and better eating

It’s wonderful how we can take just a few minutes of time to help ourselves with a guide. Take for instance my you tube video this week of Poached Salmon and Tabbouleh salad. There you can see a step by step guide to making both dishes as well as observe cutting and cooking techniques, and review the ingredients to purchase & create this dish at home. Each recipe is prepared with you in mind, to get you going in the kitchen. Our link is- http://www.youtube.com/user/CookingwithBernard#play/all/uploads-all/2/LWFAo4smdSg -and here you will find indoor and outdoor cooking tips to get you started on the right track as well as about 7 other recipes to have fun with! We always enjoy your comments or suggestions and hope you find CookingwithBernard a helpful tool. We update every Wednesday so check back for meal solutions to everyday cooking.

Thank you

Ciao

During my drive to “work”, I noticed the guy in front of me had a pretty unique job. Apparently from what it says on his truck, he spends his day scooping up dog poop. Not cat, horse, pig or chipmunk poop, just dog poop. Talk about limiting your clientele! I mean, if your going to be scooping poop anyway, why stop with dogs? Don’t most people who have dogs pick up after them anyway?

Maybe this is just a front for something else. Maybe this guy works for the FBI and is undercover tracking some local Tony Soprano or something. Maybe he is in the witness protection program and needed to be able to get around and stay under the radar. I don’t know, but I’m not buying it! Who grows up dreaming about being the guy who scoops dog poop and plasters it all over his truck? I can’t imagine the ladies are getting all excited when they see him roll up in his “company vehicle” and he says something like “Hey babe…I’m in business for myself. Yeah, that’s right…I scoop dog poop and get PAID for it!”.

What does he do when it rains or snows? I know dogs don’t stop pooping for the weather, but does he go out in it and still scoop? Does he have the dedication of the mailman? Does he get a 401k? How much does he make doing this? Does he go to his kids school for “career day” and hype the kids up about how they can grow up and do it as well? I’m sure he is a good guy and does a great job….I’ve just never seen a job like this and would love to know what inspired him to enter this field of work.

Anyway, here is a picture of the back of his truck that I snapped on my phone while stuck in traffic.  I know what you are all thinking….”Why didn’t I think of this 1st?”…right?  So today, when you think your job “stinks”, just remember, there is someone out there whose job “stinks” more than yours!

**UPDATE** MIKE-FM wants to know who you think made the rudest interruption this month? Was it Kanye West or Joe Wilson (the guy who shouted LIAR! during Obama’s speech).  Go to the MIKE-FM homepage now and the random poll is in the middle of the page

The MTV Video Music Awards went down last night annd Kanye West did not let the opportunity to make an ass of himself at another award show pass him by. The first VMA went to Taylor Swift for Best Female Video. Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” was one of the nominees. Taylor was Stunned, but pretty psyched. She said, quote, “I always wondered what it would be like to maybe win one of these someday, but never actually thought it would happen.” And then, as if on cue, Kanye jumped onstage and took the microphone from her. He said, quote, “Taylor, I’m really happy for you, and I’m gonna let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time.” The crowed booed Kanye as he handed the microphone back to Taylor. At that point, she was pretty much speechless. She did eventually try to resume her speech, but the audio had already cut out so the show could go to a pre-recorded skit. Below is some video from MTV that shows what happened. (They seem to put a quick video clip before it, but keep watching…it is there).

!!!!!”

Backstage, Kanye was asked to LEAVE the building , which he did. Also backstage, Taylor and her mother were reportedly seen crying. (Taylor was composed enough later in the show, however, to perform her winning song, “You Belong to Me”.) The crowed booed Kanye again later in the show, when Diddy announced his name among nominees for Best Male Video. Kanye was already gone by then.

But it was Beyoncé who made things right at the end of the evening, when “Single Ladies” won Video of the Year. Instead of giving her own speech, she talked about winning her first VMA as part of Destiny’s Child. She said, quote, “I remember how excited I was. I’d like Taylor to come out and have her moment.” Taylor came out onstage and gave her speech.

Shortly after the VMAs ended, Kanye issued an apology for his idiocy. He said, quote, “I’m sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom. I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would’ve said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she’s in the bleachers! I’m in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!” Then he went on to call “Single Ladies”, quote, “the best video of this decade.” And he added, quote, “I gave my awards to Outkast when they deserved it over me . . . That’s what it is!!!!!!! I’m not crazy y’all, I’m just real. Sorry for that!!! I really feel bad for Taylor and I’m sincerely sorry!!! Much respect.”

That blog post went missing after traffic to Kanye’s site was so heavy that it crashed! When it came back online, the post was gone. He has since made a 2nd apology that says: “I feel like Ben Stiller in “Meet the Parents” when he messed up everything and Robert De Niro asked him to leave… That was Taylor’s moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry.”

Celebrities are coming out via their Twitter accounts and posting their thoughts about the incident. Here are a few of the items being posted:

Pink: Kanye west is the biggest piece of s**t on earth. Quote me. Beyonce is a classy lady.I feel for her, too.Its not her fault at all, and her and taylor did their thing. And douche bag got kicked out. HA.

Katy Perry: F**K U KANYE. IT’S LIKE U STEPPED 0N A KITTEN.

Joel Madden: WOW Taylor Swift’s first VMA and she didn’t even get to ENJOY it. Kanye You were just a bully on that one man.

Adam Lambert: Kanye needs to chill. He freaks out every year. It ain’t that deep man.

John Mayer: Big love to my girl @taylorswift13. A class act.

Kelli Pickler: Tator Tot, you handled yourself with Grace. Kanye, go grow some f-ing b*lls bitch! don’t mess w/my lil sis!!

I Love Holidays no matter which one it is! They give us the chance to be creative in the food department if we plan for them. Take for instance this weekend; we have Labor Day and I, a Birthday to celebrate. So the compromise is a cookout with a clam bake on Saturday. Family will gather to overeat and most importantly celebrate kids returning to a routine (school). I always disliked this long weekend as a kid, because you could never tell any one it was your birthday when you went back to school, because it was over. Who wants to know? Today you can tell people it’s your day, but they just want to know how old you are so they can compare if you look as good or worst than they do. (LOL) But most importantly I have learned that it’s a time when you can start a new period in your life. Labor Day begins the fall season no matter how you slice it. Birthdays,( which to some people is every day ) you can establish new goals, reflect on how this past year went and interestingly enough, see if you have accomplished any of the last objective’s. I can say some, not all, are fulfilled. But they are all moving forward and “that’s a good thing”.

The other holiday coming up is Rosh Hashanah. The start of the Jewish new year, and I can say I have cooked many a beautiful meal for this holiday. It’s a very interesting occasion if you’re not Jewish or if you are, it’s a time to reflect, pray and repent.  A traditional dish I have cooked is brisket of beef and some creative non-dairy sides as well. Here is a great Brisket recipe, which is perfect any time of year. The aromas that fill your home as it slow cooks are a treat in themselves. So enjoy all your Holidays and plan ahead to mark a great meal to go with a great time. Check back for the clam back menu and recipe which is killer! What’s your favorite Holiday recipe?  Time to eat a cupcake-happy b-day to you!!

Braised Brisket of Beef

with Caramelized Onion & Dried Apricots

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 3-4 pounds flat beef brisket, trimmed of fat
  • 3 medium onions, halved and sliced
  • 4 medium carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 6 allspice berries or pinch of ground allspice
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 cup dry red wine
  • 3 cups reduced-sodium beef broth
  • 1 cup apricots cut in math stick pieces, ½ cup whole
  • 12 ea. peeled Cipolini onions or Pearl onions

Directions

    • Preheat oven to 325°F. Heat oil in a roasting pan (or Dutch oven) over medium-high heat. Add brisket and cook until browned, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to a large plate and set aside.
    • On high heat add the onions and carrots to the pot; cook, stirring frequently, until softened, about 2 minutes. Stir in allspice, thyme, paprika, salt, pepper and bay leaves, and then pour in the red wine. Bring to a boil. Cook for 3 minutes.
    • Stir in broth and return the brisket to the pot with the apricots. Bring to a simmer. Cover, place in the oven and bake for 1/2 hour. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and continue baking for 1 1/2 hours, or until tender. Turn the meat over twice during baking.
    • Blanch the Cipolini onions and add to the last 20 mins of cooking or add raw and let cook for about an hour with brisket.
    • Transfer brisket to a plate along with the Cipolini onions and whole apricots.
    • Let the liquid cool slightly and puree to create a sauce.
