On Saturday I had to do some “work” and head to the Agganis Arena over at Boston University to grab what us radio folks call “liners” from Chris Daughtry. Liners are those little things you hear on the radio that say something like “Hey this is Chris Daughtry and your listening to 93-7 Mike-FM”.
I was scheduled to record with Chris and his bass player J.P. at 2:45 PM which ended up to be a last minute problem as my son had 3 Lacrosse games in Lexington during the same time frame. Once my 8 year old daughter Libbie heard about this, she and her friend Mia just had to come with me to “help”. I didn’t realize how big of fans they were of his, but was happy to bring them along figuring they could probably at least get a picture with him if we were lucky.
When we arrived at the venue I met up with Paul who works for the record label. Once he saw that I had my daughter and her friend with me, he said there may be a slight problem due to security procedures and they may not let her and her friend in. I knew there was a chance something like that could happen, but was hoping it would all work out. It wasn’t like I brought some stranger I met at Popeye’s Chicken & Biscuits. Great…I just had to use Popeye’s as an example. Now I want to go over by Fenway and grab some. If it wasn’t raining I would so go…but anyway…this is about Daughtry and not my love of Popeye’s. So back to my little story…

About 10 minutes later, Chris and J.P. walked by with their security team and as they went by my daughter and her friend, they all said some form of “hello” and “hey ladies”. Both of the girls’ faces had the biggest smiles on them. They were as big as the smile on Marcia Brady’s face when Davey Jones showed up at the Brady Bunch house to play at the Prom.
Once Chris was done with the other guy there that was getting audio, Paul called me over. I told the girls to follow me, but to stay off to the side and watch. This was the moment of truth. Either I was going to have 2 happy little girls or 2 very sad girls in about 5 minutes.
As I was introduced to Chris and J.P., Chris looked over and asked if the girls were with me. I said yes, that 1 was my daughter and the other was her friend. He quickly said “Why are they over there. Come over here and be a part of the crew girls”. It was by far the nicest thing he could’ve said besides can I give you a million dollars! Their faces turned red as Chris and J.P. shook both of their hands, told them how nice it was to meet them both and then they talked about the stuffed animal my daughter was holding. They even knew what movie it was from and everything. Here I am a few days later and I still have no idea what movie Mr. Deveroux (or whatever his name is) was from! The point is, they cared enough about two eight year olds they had never met before to take a few minutes and interact with them.
After both Chris and J.P. read the lines I had for them, I asked if I could grab a quick picture of them with the girls. Both guys said yes, and even thought the picture should be back over by the backdrop so it would look nicer! After I snapped the picture, both Chris and J.P. took a glance at it to make sure it looked ok, gave me a handshake and then did the same to both girls and thanked “them” for coming! Yes, thanked Libbie and Mia for coming to meet THEM!
I must tell you, I was a bit shocked. I’ve been playing in this business called radio since I was 13 years old. Most of the time, as odd as this may seem, celebrities do not take the time to do these things. You are lucky if you can get a quick picture, but never the kind of 1 on 1 interaction that Chris and J.P. gave to my daughter. They are big time stars and it was truly nice of them to do what they did.

(Chris..yes, with hair..Libbie, Mia & J.P)
They were genuinely nice guys and that meant so much to me as a father. So much so that I did something I have not done in years. I bought their CD “Leave this Town” on the way home (Click Here for info on their CD). Working in radio, I hear music all of the time. It isn’t that I don’t want to buy a CD, it’s just that where I work they play music all day so I am always getting to hear things. But I walked away from this with an appreciation for both Chris and J.P. and the music of Daughtry. I felt that they were a band I would want to support personally and by buying their CD, (even though it is a small token of appreciation to them I’m sure as they will sell millions of records without me), it was my way of saying “thank you”.
Thinking back to the days Chris was on American Idol, he did always come off as a nice guy. Fame and stardom have a way of changing people. It is nice to see that Chris is still Chris and cares about his fans, especially the little ones. I didn’t know of J.P. before Saturday, but for being a rock star in a popular band, he was just as cool. So, thanks to both of you for making 2 little girls smile and giving them a memory they will never forget. You have 3 lifelong fans now.
