I had the pleasure of providing the music at a High School Graduation Party last weekend. It was held at a Function Hall and had all of the typical things you would find like food, balloons, lot’s of recent Grad’s and something that made me laugh….lots of old people! Now, I love old people, but this was actually funny.
You see, at a High School Graduation Party, the kids pick most of the music. They don’t want to hear the songs that we like…they want to hear what they like. So, with that said, I had been playing the top songs that were in the Rock, Pop and Hip Hop charts. That was great for the students, but NOT for the old people! Now, when I say old, these people had to have been on there late 70′s-early 90′s. And I have to tell you, watching the look on their face when I played any Hip Hop Song was PRICELESS! I mean, they looked so uncomfortable, but all they could do is sit there with a dazzled look on their face as the kids danced and had a jolly time getting down to such recording legends like Plies, Kardinal Offishall, The Dream & Yung Berg! (Surely, you can sense my Sarcasm calling them legends….but back to the story.)
I just kept thinking that they must be so miserable, but being there was better than being at home (or in the “home”) doing nothing! Not once did any of them talk to each other…they just sat there with a blank stare. I was tempted to put on a Frank Sinatra track to see some sort of a smile on their face, but I feared that the kids would throw cake or chairs at me. At least with the elders, I don’t have to worry about that stuff. They have manners and the inability to lift, never mind throw anything at me. You can see I have to side with the lesser of the 2 evils.
Anyway, as the night went on, not one of them left. I was very surprised. I really thought that after playing “Baby Got Back” (I am sure most of you have heard that song, and know the opening lines to it), it would put them over the edge and they would pick up their walkers and head for the mini-vans to go home and call it a night. But to my surprise, they continued to sit there and enjoy the beats and lyrics of a song about Big Butts!
Anyway, it was funny. And for those of you who have never heard the song “Baby Got Back”, I was able to find the music video for it. I had never seen the video until today.
Hey Big Daddy, enjoy your blog (even though I don’t know what a blog is) I’m 60 you know! Enjoyed “Baby Got Back” Reminds me of my Motown music. Good Luck!
