I was so happy today to wake up and it wasn’t raining! That means that I could actually drive to work without the craziness of yesterday, or so I thought!

Yesterday I thought I would scoot out of here a little early so I could make a 6PM appointment. I figured if I left by 4:20, I would be in great shape and that would allow for some traffic (because traffic ALWAYS appears when I drive…kind of like in The Truman Show). Well, was I wrong!

I was in traffic from our little slice of heaven here in The New Balance Building to where the Alewife station is on Rt. 2 for almost 2 hours alone! And to top it off, when I left our building, I had 20 miles until empty. I thought I could get gas in Concord as there would be no traffic there. HAHA. By the time I hit Alewife, I had 8 miles until empty! Just from sitting in non-moving traffic, I burned all that good gas up! And, I didn’t have a drink or anything snacks to get me through my boredom! I can’t tell you how I wanted to just pull over and take a little nap, but had the fear some silly goose would either crash into my car (because I’m a magnet for people hitting my car) or try to steal me and hold me for ransom (and I really couldn’t think of many people who would pay to get me back except for 1 of my friends, but he is broke). So I decided to just continue to move forward listening to MIKE-FM and singing along to the music like I was on stage at Gillette Stadium.

When I finally approached Alewife, I could see the lanes were merging into 1. I prayed that once I merged and moved through that, traffic would lighten up a bit and I would be on my way. Wrong again! After taking my car through a little swim at the Rt. 2/Alewife Pond (see picture below) I ended up back in more traffic!

(A view of the Rt. 2/Alewife Pond from my dashboard)

Things continued to move at a snails pace and I was starting to get a bit concerned about my little fuel situation.  I was down to 4 miles until empty…and wouldn’t that be my extremely great luck to run out of gas on Rt 2, in the rain, by myself with all of the very helpful cars just passing by me, beeping for me to get out of their way!  Thankfully I “rolled” into the Mobil station by Rt2 and the Concord Turnpike and gave my car a nice big drink of gas!

After the fill-up and my disappointment there were no hot dogs left inside, I continued on my journey back to the lovely town of Pepperell.  It was amazing at how many roads were closed and flooded!  It felt like the big bucket of water inside the water park at Canobie Lake Park just dumped onto the area over and over again!  How could so many little drops of rain add up to this mess?

(Picture of the Canobie Lake Water Park for the 4 of you in Alaska who have never been here)

Thank god I have DPS or I never would’ve found my way back.  The road crews and Police didn’t have time to put detour signs up, so people were just cruising down random roads “hoping” that it would lead to somewhere other than where they just came from!  Eventually….almost 4 hours later….I found myself home!  I was so happy my ride was over and I could just get out of my car!

Trying to get back to work today was just as fun, except it was not raining.  Roads were still closed, bodies of water were formed where there was land 2 days before, and I didn’t have time to get breakfast from my favorite little place called The Spa.  Not sure why I tossed in I couldn’t get breakfast….it wasn’t like I had roads to fix…I just didn’t want to get out of my car I guess in fear that they would close down more roads and I would have to take a short cut through Rhode Island to get to Boston. But now that I’m thinking about it…I do love The Spa.  They make the best home fries, grilled bagels, bacon, eggs……now I’m really getting upset!  I want my breakfast even if it is 3PM and I’m in Boston!  Sorry…didn’t mean to get off track.

(The Pepperell Spa makes the BEST breakfast)

So why am I telling you all of this?  I’m not sure.  It was a good way for me to kill some time around here while all the important people are in meetings.  And for you, it gave you something to do besides working!  Plus, if you were lucky and dry…then you can feel my pain!  If anything, you learned The Spa in Pepperell has the best breakfast and now I gave you something to do this weekend…..when the roads open back up!

Oh well…time to play some Peggle.  Feel free to share your little driving in the rain stories below if you want.  I can’t imagine I was the only one who hated driving in it!  And I feel bad for the people who have flooded basements!
