Dear MIKE-FM,

The other day my 12-year-old daughter came home from school, and I noticed she was wearing foundation, blush, eye shadow and mascara.  She said she bought the makeup at the drug store, and all the girls at her school wear it.

Is my 12-year-old daughter too young to be wearing makeup?  At what age should girls start wearing makeup?  Should I tell my daughter she needs to wait a few more years before she can wear makeup to school?

Thanks,

Lisa

Ok Lisa…in no way, shape or form am I am expert in anything, nor should you take my advice with any hope that I know what I’m talking about, but I would say no way.  12 is too young to me!  Kids seem to be jumping into yound adulthood (is that even a word?) earlier and earlier in my opinion.  Once you start letting them do things, good luck getting them to stop!

My daughter is 8 and she wants to wear makeup.  Since the only money she has is what she “helps herself to” from my pockets and is not allowed to go anywhere alone, I feel confident my ”NO” is good enough.  But at 12, your daughter  can get away with it and not tell you if she washes it off before you see it.  Plus, makeup will attrack boys and the longer she can avoid boys, the better!   The only thing you can do is home school her and not let her go out until she is 25, which is a good age to release her into adulthood.  Sounds like a easy, solid plan to me!

That is my opionion.  Anyone have a different one?  Share it here.

  1. Lisa -

Sadly, 12 years olds are wearing make-up these day.

Perhaps you could allow her a tinted lip-gloss and light blush or little mascara and every year add something new. I don’t think a 12 year old requires foundation or a full on made up face.

  2. I remeber when my daughter who is now 19 go through this stage. Kids are very impressionable and offers a lot of pear pressure. You want her to have a lot of good friends but at what cost? I spoke to my daughter and came to an understand…ing from both sides. her side was “all the girls are doing it and she was becoming a young lady” From your side you question if it is to soon and also that you dont want her to grow up too quickly..We (daughter and I) agreed on some make up not a lot….limited blush and Lip gloss only (No eye shadow, lip stick, or foundation) At her age she doesnt need either of the three and by using them will open the opportunity for kids to start saying that she is having the “S” word…don’t let her dress trampy either…your choice of how you handle it for all situations are different but this worked well for the two of us. More importantly be sure to discuss this with her not tell her what she can and cant do…let her have some input and she will respect you for it as well.See More

  4. I believe in giving my children the right for self expression. Foundation, no. Hot red lipstick, nope. Mascara eyeliner lil eye showdow, as long as it is done within reason
And is about self expression, not for attention. She is a small person with her own likes and dislikes just like an adult. I say yes all the way. If you can not trust her with makeup, what can you trust her with.
